Ok. Ok. Settle down. Yes, Queen B just dropped another single this weekend and the internet exploded yet again. This video does have the usual trimmings of a classic Beyoncé video – flashy styling, expensive locations and sexy choreography – but it’s probably the most politically charged and explicit one to come out of the Knowles camp yet. It’s shot in flooded New Orleans as Beyoncé sits on top of a sinking police vehicle. The video runs through scenes of hot button topics such as police brutality, racial identity, African-American beauty and America’s history of slavery. Even Blue Ivy makes an appearance. And all appropriately laid out during America’s annual Black History Month. Of course this video has spurned a few thinkpieces. And that’s just the video. The lyrics are setting social media alight too. You could say director Melina Matsoukas achieved exactly what she set out to do.
