As a group, there’s very little Run The Jewels can do wrong. Their beats are always heavy but I figured they’d always keep it light in their videos. So I was surprised when I saw this video for their single “Close Your Eyes (And Count To F**k)”. But happily so. It details the ongoing racial conflict in America, particularly the tension between white police officers and young black males in your average suburban neighbourhoods, most recently witnessed during the events of Ferguson. Director AG Rojas depicts a fight between “Cop and Kid” on a street at night and how the battle seems endless and futile even though both characters are exhausted. They are doing it not because they want to, but because they feel they have to as archetypes. On the band site, Brojas even makes a call to recognise these events and act to change them. It’s very poignant and I really appreciate the band taking a stance on such a massive unresolved issue.
