Lorde “Royals”

This anti-flash, anti-excess single stamps out an anthem that many can relate to right now. The day to day morals of a difficult economic time is settling in. And we have become pretty skeptical of images selling us expensive cars and lavish destinations when our reality is so different. Which is why 16 year old Lorde‘s new track “Royals” is everywhere right now. The lyrics are so straight and honest and talks about a generation in favour of something real. The pared down video does that too. Bare and muted, it features two male leads (a poke at the actual Royal siblings, William and Harry? or a criticism on Kanye and Jay Z’s Watch The Throne album last year?) as they move through a very mundane, simple existence. We only see Lorde for a few seconds but I think that’s a face we are going to see a lot more of. The lovely shots are courtesy of Joel Kefali who I’ve never heard of – which is embarassing since his reel looks amazing.
