Say what you want about Jay Z musically, he is an innovator. Or at least he has a crack team behind him. Part performance piece, part interview, a little bit documentary, this video for his track “Picasso Baby” is a great burst of fresh air. Helmed by the super-director Mark Romanek, Jay Z performs the track in the Pace Gallery in Brooklyn, New York (in my humble opinion, home of cool) with a small crowd and some very influential friends. With all the millions he has, he chose to shrug a big budget video in favour of a more intimate space and rather invite some of today’s most talked about creative and artistic leaders. And it worked. He’s aligning himself with these creatives and declaring himself a major modern artist. Look out for Marina Abramovic, Jenna Lyons, Alan Cummings, GIRLS stars Jemima Kirke and Adam Driver, Judd Apatow, Kehinde Wiley, Marcel Dzama, Jim Jarmusch, Rosie Perez, Wale, Cynthia Rowley, Kiah Victoria – and those are just the ones I recognise. Cannot wait for what he does next.
