So this post is really about David Shrigley. I am a huge David Shrigley fan – his subversive sense of humour and naive linework are his trademark. Dead pan and laugh-out-loud copy paired with obscure characters were right up my street. And these elements are far from what may be considered “high art”. So it came as quite a surprise that he had been shortlisted for the prestigious Turner Prize for his amusing “Brain Activity” exhibition. I immediately recalled his video (co-directed by Shynola – more on that later) for Blur’s “Good Song” – a macabre tale of a fairy and squirrel in love. This video has always been one of my all-time favourites and it’s really the ending that really embodies Shrigley. Enjoy.
